What we do

Partition Systems for UK Commercial & Public Buildings

A partition is only fire-rated if the whole system — studs, boards, insulation, fixings, deflection head and every penetration through it — matches the tested detail. MGN Group designs, supplies and installs partitions as complete systems, sealing them with our own fire stopping team and fitting fire doors and fire-rated glazing within them, so a single accredited contractor owns the compartment line.

  • Fire-Rated Partitions

Metal stud and board partitions built to 30, 60, 90 or 120-minute tested systems, with fire-stopped heads, junctions and penetrations — forming new compartment walls or reinstating existing ones.

  • Metal Stud & Drywall

Non-loadbearing metal stud partitions, wall linings and dry-lining for offices, retail, healthcare and education fit-outs — plumb, true and ready for decoration.

  • Glazed Partitions & Screens

Framed and frameless glazed office partitions, and fire-rated glazed screens where light and compartmentation both matter — supplied and installed as one package.

Where we work

Partitions Across the UK

One specialist team, mobilised nationally. MGN operates from Cumbernauld, between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and installs partition systems across Scotland, England and Wales.

Scotland

From our Central Belt base we install partitions for commercial landlords, main contractors, NHS estates, universities and housing providers across Greater Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Lothians, and throughout Scotland. Edinburgh's converted tenements and Victorian commercial stock often need fire-rated partitions built into irregular, older fabric — retrofit compartmentation is a core part of what we do.

England & Wales

We deliver partition packages for main contractors, fit-out contractors and building owners across England and Wales, from single-floor office reconfigurations to phased programmes across a national portfolio — coordinated centrally, executed locally, and certified to one standard.

Who we serve

Commercial & Public Sector Partitions

We deliver partition systems across a wide range of building types and sectors throughout the UK.

  • Commercial Buildings

  • Education

Schools, colleges and universities — programmed around term time.

  • Housing Associations

Fire-rated separating walls and riser enclosures across social housing blocks.

  • New Build Developments

Partition packages coordinated with the main contractor's programme, from first fix to handover.

  • Facilities Management

Reconfiguration and remedial partition works for FM companies managing large portfolios.

Our credentials

Third-Party Accredited — IFSM, CHAS & BM TRADA Certified

Accreditation means an independent body has verified our processes, training and workmanship — not just our paperwork.

  • BM TRADA Q-Mark

    Fire door installation & maintenance

BM TRADA Q-Mark is the UK gold standard for fire door installation and maintenance. Holding this certification means our entire installation process — from specification to sign-off — has been independently assessed and approved. You can verify MGN's registration directly on the BM TRADA scheme website.

  • FDIS Inspection Scheme

    Fire door inspection certification

The Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) is the only nationally recognised scheme for fire door inspection in the UK. Only FDIS-registered inspectors can issue a fire door inspection certificate that carries genuine third-party weight with insurers and enforcing authorities. Most contractors offering fire door inspections are not FDIS registered.

  • CHAS Accredited

    Health & safety pre-qualification

CHAS (Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme) is the standard pre-qualification requirement for most public sector procurement across the UK. If your building is NHS, council or publicly funded, MGN's CHAS accreditation means we can be appointed without additional vetting.

  • IFSM Member

    Institute of Fire Safety Managers

IFSM membership demonstrates ongoing commitment to professional development and regulatory awareness in fire safety management. It is a signal that MGN's team stays current with legislative changes and best practice — not just at time of certification, but continuously.

The law

Where a partition forms part of a compartment wall or protects an escape route, it is a fire safety measure in law. It must be built to a tested system and kept in efficient working order — and the responsible person carries the liability if it isn't.

  • Building Regulations — Approved Document B & Technical Handbook Section 2

Set the compartmentation and fire-resistance requirements for walls and linings in England & Wales (Requirement B3) and Scotland (Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004, Section 2), including the need for fire stopping at junctions and penetrations.

  • Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 & Fire (Scotland) Act 2005

Require the responsible person to maintain compartment walls, linings and their fire stopping in efficient working order and good repair.

  • BS EN 1364-1 · BS 476-22

The fire-resistance test standards for non-loadbearing walls and partitions. A partition is only fire-rated if it replicates the tested construction.

  • BS 8000-8 · BS 9999

The workmanship code for plasterboard partitions and dry linings, and the British Standard for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings.

The most common partition failures we find are at the head of the wall and around services — a partition that stops short of the soffit, or has been cut for cables and never made good, no longer provides the rating it was built for.

This summary is not legal advice — your own fire risk assessment sets out the specific duties for your building.

Quick answers

  • A partition is fire-rated when it is built exactly to a construction that has been fire-tested to BS EN 1364-1 or BS 476-22 — the specific studs, board type and layers, insulation, fixing centres and head detail — and every opening or penetration through it is fire-stopped with a compatible tested system. Change any element and the rating can no longer be demonstrated.
