Cavity barriers are fire-resisting barriers fitted inside concealed spaces — roof voids, ceiling voids, wall cavities and floor voids — to stop fire and smoke travelling unseen through them and bypassing the building's compartment walls and floors. Building Regulations require them at compartment lines, around openings and at set intervals in large voids; without them, a fire can spread across a building before it's detected.

Usually only through a survey. Cavity barriers are hidden by design, so a compartmentation survey — lifting ceiling tiles, inspecting roof and floor voids and checking wall cavities at compartment lines — is the way to find out. MGN surveys photograph and plot every missing or defective barrier and grade it by priority.

Yes. Retrofitting barriers into existing voids — including in older, listed and converted buildings with irregular construction — is a core part of our work. We select tested systems suited to the void and substrate, install with minimal disruption to occupants, and document each barrier's location and specification.

They're related but different. Fire stopping seals the gaps where services or joints pass through a fire-resisting wall or floor. Cavity barriers subdivide or close off the concealed spaces within a construction so fire can't spread through the void itself. Most compartmentation programmes need both — and MGN delivers both under one contract.
